CH 06PNTV School Podcasting

School podcasting, with purpose.

PNTV School Podcasting is a student-led production practice at Prospect North Primary School. Students investigate a subject, shape questions, listen, speak, record, edit and make careful decisions about who the finished work is for.

CH 6.1A production, not a worksheet

The work is in the making.

The finished audio is only the visible outcome. The learning context comes from the decisions students make before, during and after a recording.

  1. 01

    Find a subject

Start with a real topic, then work out what an audience needs to know.

  2. 02

    Shape questions

Prepare open questions, listen to an answer and decide what is worth asking next.

  3. 03

    Write for the ear

Turn notes into a clear introduction, question or explanation that makes sense when heard once.

  4. 04

    Use a voice

Practise pace, expression, clarity and the choices that help another person follow.

  5. 05

    Record carefully

Work with sound, space and equipment so the conversation can be heard.

  6. 06

    Edit with judgement

Choose what belongs, put it in order and keep the original meaning clear.

  7. 07

    Ask for feedback

Listen back, notice what works and revise where the message can be clearer.

  8. 08

    Share responsibly

Think about the audience, permissions and whether a piece belongs on the public channel or within the school community.

CH 6.2Audience changes the work

Someone has to understand.

A real audience gives students a reason to make choices. A question has to be clear. An introduction has to provide context. An edit has to keep the speaker’s meaning intact.

That does not always mean a public audience. PNTV School Podcasting includes public work on the official channel and classroom work shared privately with teachers and families.

CH 6.3Curriculum context

Connected to the work students are doing.

South Australian government schools use the Australian Curriculum from Reception to Year 10. Podcasting can provide a practical context for several of its learning areas and capabilities. It is not a separate curriculum or a certification.

South Australian curriculum information (opens in a new tab)
  1. 01

    English

Oral language is foundational for exploring ideas and expressing viewpoints. Audience and purpose shape language choices, which makes a podcast a useful context for planning a spoken text.

  2. 02

    Literacy

Literacy includes listening, speaking and interaction. Its speaking and listening element includes planned speaking for an audience, purpose and task.

  3. 03

    Media Arts

Media Arts supports collaborative planning, production, sharing and publishing, with attention to audience and responsible practice.

  4. 04

    Media literacy

This curriculum connection brings Media Arts, English and Digital Technologies together through audience, representation, media technologies, safe practice and critical and creative production.
